Web-based operating systems could be the future… but only if all those into making viruses and hacking remote systems or stealing credit card information would suddenly disappear, so I think we won’t get to see anyone simply using Windows or Linux as a gate to eyeOS or something similar. Nevertheless, this is a very interesting dream, don’t you think?
A fact that seems surprising to me is that the thin line between start pages like iGoogle or Netvibes and Web-based operating systems seems to fade away, and sometimes it’s really hard to say if a certain site can be called “Web OS” or not. In the end, it doesn’t really matter, as long as everything works well, and with eyeOS, I must say everything’s just great!
I guess I should tell you a few words about the features, but I won’t. Why? Just go here, create a new account, and discover them by yourself! Reading about eyeOS without playing with it is like reading a cookbook and eating dust… and I am not kidding.
Before moving on, I have to tell you why I wrote about eyeOS here – you can download it and run it on your own server, that’s why! This is completely free, and all your server needs is just a little bit of free space and Apache + PHP5! Even more, there are some nice tools available for eyeOS users in the eyeOS Downloads Center, but I’ll also leave them for you to discover… 😉
Compatibility: any major browser, as long as JavaScript is enabled (I tried it in Opera, Safari, and IE – everything worked just great)
